I love the current hosting provider for my website, Digital Ocean. They are a fairly new hosting company, but they have a unique approaching to website hosting that fits my needs perfectly.
Digital Ocean Gives You Complete Control
In the past, I have used the shared hosting provider InMotion Hosting, and I have nothing but good things to say about them. Their technical support is top-notch and prompt, and they have a really good product for the price. If you like someone else to take care of all the technical details for your hosting, I would really recommend InMotion.
The thing I really like about Digital Ocean, though, is that they actually let you build a server in the cloud from the ground up. You build your own LAMP Stack (Linux – Apache – MySQL – PHP), and then you configure it just the way you like it. If you want complete control, Digital Ocean offers it.
Beyond that, they have a great control panel for running your configuring your domain name to point to your server, for running backups, and many other great options.
I’m something of a wannabe geek, and the opportunity to play with and tweak my own server was too much to pass up.
Digital Ocean Offers Amazing Tutorials
Now, while I am a wannabe geek, I should probably emphasize the wannabe portion of that phrase. I really don’t always know what I’m doing. I know enough to know what I ought to be doing (most of the time, at least), but I don’t really know how to put those plans into action.
But, Digital Ocean offers amazing tutorials that guide you step-by-step through the process of setting up your own server, installing that LAMP Stack, installing WordPress, configuring basic security precautions, setting up the SSL certificate, and much more.
This is the perfect solution for a wannabe geek. (And real geeks as well.)
Digital Ocean is Dirt Cheap
The cheapest plan is $5/month, and the hosting package that will buy is plenty of power for hosting a WordPress blog like this one. Also, it’s month-to-month, so you also have much more flexibility than most hosting providers that lock you in for two years.
I highly recommend it.
